SPILL Festival 2013 - On Contact - took place across London over 11 days, presenting 86 live events alongside the SPILL National Platform, SPILL Onscreen, SPILL Folk Academy, SPILL Thinker in Residence (Tim Etchells), SPILL Think Tank programme, SPILL Writing, SPILL Feasts, and SPILL TV & Photography. The programme included the marathon 24 Hour Quizoola by Forced Entertainment and The Salon Project by Untitled Productions.
Curated around ideas of Contact, the festival built directly on the previous year's theme of Proximity, exploring connection, exchange and advocacy. Across a packed 11-day period, the programme brought together uncompromising live performance, radical actions, participatory interventions, installation, film and discussion, alongside a standout SPILL National Platform. Venue partners included the Barbican, National Theatre Studio, Soho Theatre, Toynbee Studios and the Whitechapel Gallery, with works also taking place in found spaces and on the streets.
For its fifth edition, SPILL presented artists from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, the USA and the UK. Highlights included the retinal trip of Becoming An Image by Cassils, the visceral LAST(ing) by Martin O'Brien, Jamie Lewis Hadley's audacious Analogue to a Blunt Trauma, Oblivia's epic trilogy Entertainment Island, Untitled Productions' ambitious Salon Project, a 24-hour Quizoola performance by Forced Entertainment - and Splat!, a full-on Barbican main-stage takeover by The Famous Lauren Barri Holstein.
