SPILL Festival 2018 - On Time took place over 11 days at sites across Ipswich. At its heart was the giant sound installation Clarion Call by Byron J Scullin and Supple Fox, featuring Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and a host of guest voices. On Time also presented Inter_Versal by Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti, alongside a full programme of live events and film. The festival launched the SPILL Open, The Pyre Parade, Block Magic, The SPILL Reader and Zombie, alongside SPILL mainstays including SPILL Cafe, SPILL Think Tank, SPILL Writing, SPILL TV & SPILL Photography.

Developing directly out of the rolling Think Tank activities with artists and local people, On Time took the festival into the streets in bold ways. The SPILL Open, an international evolution of the SPILL National Platform, presented work by 10 early makers, while Clarion Call became a daily presence across Ipswich, with its 480 speakers installed on rooftops around the town’s waterfront. A co-commission between SPILL and 14-18 NOW, the work commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War and reached 50,000 people a day across the 11-day festival. In the year leading up to the festival, SPILL also collaborated with people living locally, connecting older people with younger people and creating shared projects together, including The Pyre Parade, a public ritual of burning collective bad news on a large pyre and clearing space for winter.
